การวัดค่า BOD ในน้ำ 
เป็นการวัดปริมาณออกซิเจนละลายที่แบคทีเรียใช้ในการย่อยสลายสารอินทรีย์ในน้ำภายในเวลา 5 วันและที่อุณหภูมิ 20 Degree C
ซึ่งเป็นการบ่งชี้ถึงปริมาณสารอินทรีย์  ดังนั้น น้ำเสียที่มีค่าบีโอดีสูงก็หมายถึง น้ำเสียที่มีสารอินทรีย์เข้มข้นมาก 
เนื่องจากการวิเคราะห์ปริมาณสารอินทรีย์โดยตรงนั้นมีความยุ่งยากหลายประการ  จึงใช้วิธีการวัดปริมาณออกซิเจนที่ถูกใช้ไปในการ
ย่อยสลายสารอินทรีย์ซึ่งกระทำได้ง่ายกว่า
